After hours emergency and urgent care protocol

Here are our guidelines of what urgent needs are and how to request access to our emergency appointments. These emergency appointments (next or same day) are available in our schedule for our current clients and will be triaged accordingly.

As a reminder, our business hours are Monday to Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Thursday and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.  We are closed on weekends and statutory holidays.

To request an URGENT or EMERGENCY appointment during office hours, just call or text our main line at 306-522-7152.

To request a NEXT DAY/ URGENT appointment during closed hours, please TEXT our main line at 306-522-7152.  Please provide us with the details about what is going on – what are the symptoms your pet has and how long have you noticed them.  We will be monitoring our text messages intermittently after hours and you will be provided with a response on what the next steps will be.  Be aware- it may be a few hours before you receive a response.  You will either be given an appointment time for the next day or advised that we will contact you when we are open the next business day (for when it is not as urgent).

It is important for you, our pet parents, to know how we determine what is a true EMERGENCY and how we triage these cases.     Be aware, our clinic is NOT able to address or assist with RED cases when we are closed.  We also do not have an isolation ward within our clinic to address potential contagious disease situations (for example, possible parvo or distemper).  If this is the case, we would need to refer you to another clinic as outlined below.

RED (Life threatening)

  • Paralysis

  • Seizure

  • Ingestion of toxin or poison

  • Severe bleeding

  • Acute trauma (hit by car, etc)

  • Choking

  • Very young ill patient

ORANGE (Serious, but stable)

  • Minor wounds (no major bleeding)

  • Elevated temperature (more than 39.7 C or 103.5 F)

  • Coughing

  • Allergic reaction

  • Eye issues

YELLOW (Non-urgent)

  • Diarrhea

  • Ear issues

  • Skin conditions

  • Difficulty walking

Life threatening situations

In the event that you have a RED situation and we are closed, please take the following steps:

  1. CALL the 24 HOUR Animal Care Centre at 306-761-1449. They are our local emergency clinic.

  2. If they are not available, call the WCVM Veterinary Medical Centre Small Animal Clinic in Saskatoon at 306-966-7126.  CALL FIRST before travelling to Saskatoon to be triaged and get information on how they can help you.

We hope this helps you when you are in a situation where your pet needs care after hours.  While we are not immediately available to answer questions during our closed hours, we will respond to your text messages within a few hours.  We will be checking on a regular basis.  We will NOT be monitoring the phone message or social media messaging, so TEXT is the way to contact us after hours.
